Oil change - More than you wanted to know
Engine oil
Most cars on the road today use multigrade oil - an oil that can operate effectively in both cold and hot weather. A multigrade oil is denoted by two numbers, such as 5W-30.
About the oil classification system
Each motor oil comes with a classification indicating its viscosity, i.e. its friction or resistance to flow. In a multigrade oil, the first number indicates the oil's fluidity when cold. The lower the number, the lighter the oil and the better its performance at low temperatures. The second number indicates the thickness of the same oil at high temperatures. For example, a 5W-30 oil will flow like a 5-weight oil at -18°C and like a 30-weight oil at 100°C.
Why is viscosity important?
During cold start-up, only a small amount of oil is present in the upper parts of the engine. To reduce friction when the upper parts of the engine, such as the valve train, pistons, cam cap and cam bearings, rub against each other, a low-viscosity oil enables the oil to reach the components more quickly.
Why are 5W-30 and 5W-20 oils so popular?
Many vehicles leave the factory with 5W-30 or 5W-20 motor oil. Vehicle manufacturers recommend these as lightweight oils that work well over a range of temperatures and help improve fuel economy.
Synthetic oils
Not all motor oils are 100 % petroleum-based. Synthetic oils, which are mainly chemically compounded lubricants, are also available. They can offer :
- Greater viscosity stability over a wider temperature range
- Less oil thickening
- Less wear and improved load capacity.
Which oil is right for your car?
The easiest and surest way to find out is to consult your owner's manual... or talk to your mechanic at AUTO SUD Sénégal.
Oil filters
Oil filters are designed to trap foreign particles suspended in the oil, preventing them from reaching engine bearings and other parts.
Fluids
Your vehicle relies on a variety of fluids to operate its braking, steering, transmission, engine cooling and other systems. When these fluids are degraded or at incorrect levels, damage can occur to other components... so always follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule.
- Automatic transmission oil
This is a fluid, usually oil-based, used in a transmission to lubricate and cool the gearbox and provide hydraulic pressure for automatic shifting.
- Brake fluid
This is the hydraulic fluid used to transmit pressure through the brake lines in a braking system, providing braking power and protecting hydraulic brake components from internal corrosion.
- Coolant/Antigel
This is a mixture of water and antifreeze used in an engine cooling system to dissipate heat and maintain engine temperature within its operating range.
Starting and charging
The battery starts your car, powers on-board computers and provides energy in an emergency. A weak battery puts stress on alternators and starters, especially during extreme temperatures. Let AUTO SUD test and inspect your battery regularly.
Air filters
Clean air filters can increase engine performance, improve fuel efficiency and reduce engine wear. Cabin air filters can minimize cabin air contaminants and improve heating/ventilation efficiency.
Courtesy Check
The Courtesy Check is fast, efficient and covers many elements of your vehicle's preventive maintenance program. We'll perform a visual check, looking inside, outside, under the hood and under the vehicle, then provide you with a written report.
